Each year, the fishing town of Quarteira honors its patron, Our Lady of the Conception, with candlelight and processions to the sea. Devotion and festivity gather the seafaring community around the Virgin, in a celebration deeply woven into the life of this Algarve fishing town.

Procissão de Velas (Candlelight Procession)

Visitors can join the candlelit march respecting the solemn atmosphere, following the statue from the main church down to the São Pedro do Mar church. This is a moving, intimate local ritual under evening skies.

Procissão Solene (Solemn Procession to Sea)

Spectators line the streets and harbor to witness two processions converging – one on land, one by water. Visitors see decorated boats carrying the statue and men carrying the church statue to the fishing port, culminating in prayers and the blessing of the sea.

Meeting of the Statues and Blessing of the Sea

At the fishing port, visitors share in the ceremonial salute to the patroness and witness the blessing of the boats and water. It is a highly symbolic emotional moment, reflecting centuries of devotion.
