Óbidos was a royal town in medieval Portugal, and the festival was established to celebrate this heritage. Since 2002 it has offered historical animation in one of the best-preserved medieval burgos (boroughs) in Portugal. The town's fortified castle and walls provide an authentic backdrop, linking the festival to regional medieval traditions and fostering cultural tourism.
