Each February, the city of Nice throws France's largest winter carnival, two weeks of giant-headed float parades, marching bands, and flower battles along the seafront. With a fresh theme each year and roots reaching back to medieval times, it fills the Riviera with color in the depths of winter.
The 1294 first mention of Nice Carnival falls within the Medieval County of Provence era (800-1388), when Nice was part of the Angevin-ruled Provencal county.
