LOCAL COMMUNITY & FOLK LIFE
Brauchtum "Neujahren"
Merligen, Switzerland
From December 31 to January 2, the village of Merligen keeps Neujahren, a New Year custom found nowhere else, led by its local folklore group. Children with bells open the celebration on the evening of the 31st, ringing in the year in the old Alpine belief that noise drives away the dark.
Neujahren in Merligen is an expression of ancient Alpine beliefs that loud bells and noise on New Year’s Eve cleanse the community of misfortune. It is an acutely local practice (only found in Merligen/Sigriswil) and a point of pride for residents. The ritual involves community music clubs and families, reinforcing social bonds and local identity during the holiday.
This tradition has religious overtones of purification. Dress modestly and observe respectfully. Do not cross the procession or distract participants. Courtesy (handshakes or local greetings) is appreciated when meeting the Trychler.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
