Each year, on the Sunday before June 3, the five nestinari villages of the Strandzha set out at dawn for the Great Ayazma. The pilgrimage climbs to the holiest spring at Vlahov Dol, revered in local legend, in a celebration that gathers the fire-dancing villages around their sacred source.

How we decide

Key moments

Ritual at the Great Ayazma

Witnesses hear Orthodox liturgy mixed with ancient chants, see the decorated icon-wagon and drum, and watch as an experienced nestinar may dance in a small blazed circle at the site. The atmosphere is solemn and mystical, with incense and the sound of prayers mingling in the forest.
