Each carnival, the island of Naxos lights up for its famous night-time Torch Parade. Hundreds of islanders in black and white masks, the Lampadiforoi, march through the streets by torchlight on the eve of Clean Monday, in a celebration that revives the island's ancient Dionysian roots.

The tradition was initiated by a local theatrical group to honor Dionysus and has since grown into a beloved annual ritual generating community spirit and continuity.
