Each year, the highland village of Východná hosts Ovenálie, a nationwide celebration of the shepherd's life. Sheep-cheese making, folk music, and contests in cheese-thread pulling and lamb-stew cooking fill the day, in a celebration of the Walachian pastoral heritage of the central Slovak mountains.
