Each December, the Moldovan village of Sofia, in the northern Drochia district, gathers caroling bands for a festival of winter song. Men's choirs from across Moldova and neighboring Romania sing the old colinde, the Christmas carols, in a celebration of a tradition that has long led the holidays in these villages.
