Each August, the basilica of Elche fills for the Misteri d'Elx, a sacred musical drama performed here since the Middle Ages. Sung in old Valencian and Latin, it tells of the death and crowning of the Virgin Mary, with angels lowered from the great dome on ropes, in a living piece of medieval theatre honored by UNESCO.
