Each August 9, the people of Brussels plant the Meyboom, the city's "tree of joy," at a street corner in the old center. The maypole and its merry parade celebrate a medieval victory over rival Leuven, in a celebration whose roots reach back to 1213, one of the city's oldest living folk traditions.

The Meyboom is rooted in a 13th-century legend about beer taxes and a wedding party raid: after Brussels defeated its rival Leuven in 1213, Duke John I of Brabant granted Brussels the privilege to plant a May-tree on St. Lawrence’s Day (9 August) each year, as long as it is erected by 5:00 p.m. Otherwise, the “privilege” would pass to Leuven.
