Launched in 1984 to extend Gotland’s summer season, Medieval Week plays on the island’s rich medieval legacy (for example, the historic Battle of Visby in 1361 and Gotland’s Hanseatic history). It quickly became tradition: since its inception on week 31 (late July/early August), Visby’s streets fill with archers, jugglers and townspeople in medieval garb preparing for events on Gotlandsängen and inside historic sites.
Visitors are encouraged to respect the historical setting. Many participants wear medieval attire, so respectful curiosity is expected. Photography of performers is generally allowed but be mindful when taking close-ups to respect privacy.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
