Each year on the Sunday before Ascension, the Belgian city of Mechelen honors the Virgin Mary with the Hanswijk Procession. A great Marian statue is carried through the city, recalling the barge that once bore it, in a pageant held since 1272, when the citizens prayed for deliverance from the plague.
