Maskaraba: Encuentro de Carnavales Rurales y Botargas de Álava
Zalduondo, Spain
Each year, the Álava village of Zalduondo gathers the rural carnival figures of the Basque Country for Maskaraba. Costumed botargas and masqueraders from many villages bring their rituals together, in a young celebration, begun in 2024, of the deep masked-carnival heritage of the region.
The festival celebrates Basque rural carnival heritage. In these traditions, masked characters (like botargas and marrajos) play roles of tricksters and fertility spirits in winter festivities. For example, Maskaraba includes a ceremonial burning of a straw figure, representing transgression and renewal in carnival customs. By uniting these local customs, Maskaraba highlights a shared cultural identity for Álava’s villages.
