In Bukovina folklore, Malanka (Generous Evening) on Jan 13 is a beloved New Year’s carnival with roots in ancient traditions. Participants in traditional masks (goat, bear, Old Woman, etc.) carol and perform rituals to drive out evil and bring good fortune. Chernivtsi’s Malanka-Fest showcases this carnival in a citywide parade and stage concert, blending age-old rituals with local humor and folk costumes.
