Each late August, the Catalan wine town of Vilafranca del Penedès honors its patron, Sant Fèlix, with one of the region's great festivals. Parading giants and fire-runs fill the streets, but the heart of it is the famous castellers, the human-tower teams who raise some of the tallest castells in all of Catalonia.

Each late August, the Catalan wine town of Vilafranca del Penedès honors its patron, Sant Fèlix, with one of the region's great festivals. Parading giants and fire-runs fill the streets, but the heart of it is the famous castellers, the human-tower teams who raise some of the tallest castells in all of Catalonia.
This festival follows the traditional Penedès pattern: morning drum parades of folk giants and devils, midday casteller (human tower) exhibitions at the town square, and evening processions honoring the saint. Five local 'Administrators' ceremonially organize the events (lighting opening fireworks from the town hall balcony) while local dances and figures (gegants, Falcons) join the procession.
