Each year before Lent, the Rhineland city of Mainz throws one of Germany's great carnivals, building to the Rose Monday parade. Floats poking fun at politics and the news roll through the streets behind marching bands and costumed crowds, in a celebration of satire and high spirits the city holds dear.
