Each year before Lent, the Swiss city of Lucerne erupts into Fasnacht, beginning with a wild early-morning start on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday. Masked revelers and brassy Guggenmusik bands fill the lakeside old town with noise and color, in a carnival with its own playful, unmistakable character.
