On the night of Orthodox Easter, the town of Leonidio sends hundreds of glowing paper balloons floating up into the dark sky. Each of the town's churches builds its own, and as the bells ring out "Christ is Risen," the balloons rise together over the rooftops in a slow drift of light.

In Leonidio, Arcadia (capital of Tsakonia), local parish groups handcraft and release flaming paper hot‑air balloons on Holy Saturday night as the chant ‘Christ is Risen’ is heard from the town’s five churches. The luminous launches fill the sky over Leonidio at the Resurrection each Orthodox Easter, a practice documented since at least the 19th century and widely recognized as one of Greece’s most distinctive Easter customs.
This celebration benefits from careful observation, local guidance, and respect for community boundaries.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
Avoid filming or photographing moments that feel private, sacred, or restricted.
Some celebrations are best approached quietly: arrive prepared, follow posted rules, and leave without turning the moment into content.
