Each Easter, the town of Talavera de la Reina dresses in blue and white for Las Mondas, a spring festival whose roots reach back before the Romans. Originally a pagan spring celebration (venerated Ceres in Roman times), Las Mondas was later Christianized around 602 AD with offerings to Nuestra Señora del Prado, patron of Talavera. Over centuries the festival evolved: in the Middle Ages it became linked to bullfights (“Fiesta de los Toros”) and by the 15th century ceremonies were standardized.
