On the night of June 23, the Latvian seaside resort of Jūrmala celebrates Jāņi, the midsummer festival that is the high point of the year. People wear oak-leaf and flower wreaths, light bonfires, and sing the old līgo songs over caraway cheese and beer, staying up all night to greet the returning sun.
