Each January, the village of Piornal stages one of Spain's most extraordinary festivals, the Jarramplas. A figure in a brightly painted costume and horned mask parades the streets, drumming, while the crowd pelts him with thousands of turnips, in a strange and spectacular ritual rooted deep in local folklore.
