Each Carnival Saturday, the Istrian city of Koper fills its streets with costumes and floats for its Pust procession. Local cultural and youth groups join a festive march of themed disguises, in a celebration, young but lively, that gives Slovenian Istria its own joyful expression of the pre-Lenten carnival.
As a local expression of Pust (pre-Lenten carnival), the Koper procession combines Slovenian Istrian culture and international carnival motifs. The 2024 theme was circus-inspired, encouraging participants to dress as clowns, jugglers and other festive figures. Though rooted less in ancient ritual, it reflects the broader Slovenian custom of celebrating Mardi Gras with humorous pageantry.
Informal city celebration: join the parade by signing up in advance or watch from the sidewalks. Respect local symbols (dragon emblems, etc.) and keep the atmosphere friendly.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
