Each year, the Latvian city of Jelgava gathers ceramic artists to shape monumental sculptures from local fireclay. Over ten days, the works rise and are fired and unveiled in public, in a symposium, held since 2013, that draws on the deep clay-working heritage of the Zemgale region.
The International Fireclay Sculpture Symposium record is date-tracked, but stronger reviewed Field Guide media would make it easier to inspect.

Jelgava’s deep clay-working tradition (šamots) underpins this symposium. It was initiated by sculptor Aleksandrs Djačenko in 2013 to cultivate a new open-air ceramic art form. Fireclay (šamots) is a characteristic local material of Zemgale, blending clay and fired clay fragments for heat resistance.
