Pokrova is deeply linked to Ukrainian Cossack heritage: historically, the Cossacks built many churches dedicated to the Holy Protection, viewing the Virgin Mary as their battlefield protector. Poltava's local church of the Intercession carries on this tradition. Since 2023 the Orthodox Church of Ukraine observes Pokrova on October 1 (new calendar).
This is a sacred Orthodox service. Visitors should dress modestly (e.g. women cover hair) and act respectfully (no chatter or flash photography).
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
