Each spring, the frozen surface of Lake Inari hosts the Porokuninkuusajot, the great reindeer racing championships. Herders gather to race their reindeer across the ice and compete in their craft, in a celebration tied to the Sámi pastoral life, held when winter grazing ends and the herds come together.
