Every few years, the Tyrolean town of Imst stages the Schemenlaufen, one of the great masked carnivals of the Alps. Hundreds of performers in carved wooden masks move through town in a choreographed procession, acting out the triumph of spring over winter, in a tradition honored by UNESCO.
