Each August 2, the village of Smilevo commemorates the 1903 Ilinden Uprising, decided at the historic Smilevo Congress held here. Wreaths are laid at the Dame Gruev monument and folklore fills the day, in a community celebration of a village that stands at the heart of Macedonia's struggle for freedom.
