Hvannasund Pilot Whale Hunt

Grindadráp

In the far-northern Faroese village of Hvannasund, on the island of Viðoy, the community practices the grindadráp, the traditional pilot whale hunt. Whalers drive a pod into the bay and ashore, sharing the meat among the households, in a communal harvest that has long sustained life in this remote corner of the islands.
