Simadan derives from Bonaire’s history of slavery and agriculture. Uniquely, enslaved people on Bonaire were permitted small personal crops, giving rise to joyous harvest celebrations. Each year families join in harvest labor and feasting. It is both cultural and religious: often commencing with a church mass on Easter Monday morning, then followed by a parade in traditional costume and community festivities in Rincon.
