Hanselsprung derives from local craft guild rituals (Hanselmillers) and represents a symbolic sweeping away of winter. Its roots are local (the term ‘Hansel’ refers to guild apprentice costumes) but it fits the larger Alemannic mask carnival pattern (Parades on Fasnetsonntag and Rosenmontag). Schramberg’s citizens guard this custom as a mark of their village identity.
