Carnival in Guadeloupe has roots in European pre-Lenten festivities and African slave traditions. Over 150 years it has evolved into a major cultural expression, with constant critique and creativity by local mas groups. It serves as a public channel for collective celebration, identity, and political satire (e.g. mock burlesque weddings or reversed-role parades).
