The story behind it
This festival continues the early 19th-century Lieder- und Sängerbund tradition in Germany. Large choral gatherings were part of liberal civic movements (e.g. at the Hambach Festival of 1832 ). The Deutsche Chorverband promotes these roots by convening choirs from across the country for the Chorfest, linking back to the citizen-singer heritage of the Bürgerbewegung in the 1800s.
