Once every four years, the Gastein Valley fills with the thunder of the Perchtenlauf, when more than a hundred and fifty costumed figures parade through the snow. In fearsome carved masks and heavy bells, the Perchten drive out winter's evil spirits, in an Alpine rite reaching back to ancient midwinter customs.

The Perchtenlauf stems from pre-Christian Alpine traditions (rooted in winter-solstice rites and ancient Germanic fertility cults). Perchten are often seen as the older counterparts to Krampus.
