Once every four years, the Gastein Valley fills with the thunder of the Perchtenlauf, when more than a hundred and fifty costumed figures parade through the snow. In fearsome carved masks and heavy bells, the Perchten drive out winter's evil spirits, in an Alpine rite reaching back to ancient midwinter customs.

Arrive early (around 6:30) to secure a spot; bundle up as it is very cold. Expect a dramatic sight as masked Perchten begin their walk.

Opening Procession (Bad Hofgastein)

Find a vantage point on a hillside or road corner by 6:30. The early morning chill and the crackling snow under heavy bells make for a memorable atmosphere.

Closing of Perchtenlauf

Position yourself by 18:30 near the Kurgartenstrasse site. The atmosphere is celebratory; locals often share small treats or schnapps at the end.

Large crowds especially at start and in town squares; ample space outside central hubs. Expect narrow walkways where people gather closely.
