Sumardagurinn fyrsti is rooted in the old Icelandic calendar (Harpa, first month of summer) and marks the end of winter. In Icelandic folklore, the holiday has traditionally involved checking for frost on the eve of the day as a good-omen omen for summer. Modern celebrations in Kópavogur combine that heritage with parades, children’s concerts and cultural exhibits organized by the municipality.
