Festival of the Fogaceiras

Festa das Fogaceiras

Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal

Dates to be announcedDates pending

Every January 20, the town of Santa Maria da Feira keeps a vow made to Saint Sebastian during a plague in 1505. Girls in white carry tall sweet breads called fogaças balanced on their heads in a procession through town, in a centuries-old rite that the community renews year after year.
