Festival of the Cooks

Fête des Cuisinières

Each August, the women cooks of Guadeloupe parade through Pointe-à-Pitre in dazzling madras costume, baskets of food on their arms, for the Fête des Cuisinières. Begun in 1916 as a cooks' mutual-aid society, the day starts with a church blessing and ends in a great feast celebrating the island's kitchens.
