Each summer, the Bulgarian village of Gigen, on the site of a Roman city, hosts a grand reenactment of the ancient Danube frontier. Local and international history groups recreate battles, ceremonies, and daily life in authentic costume, in a vivid celebration of the Roman heritage that lines the great river.
