Each August, the tiny border village of Barrancos holds its great fair in honor of Our Lady of the Conception. Bulls are at the heart of the festivities, as locals proudly say there is no Fêra without them, in a celebration that gathers this Alentejo village on the Spanish frontier for its most important days of the year.

Solemn Procession of Nossa Senhora da Conceição

Tourists can watch the traditional religious parade of the saint’s statue through Barrancos, accompanied by music and banners. The mood is respectful and communal, setting a sacred tone.

Corrida de Touros de Morte (Bullfight)

Paid-attendance event where spectators observe a full Portuguese-style bullfight culminating in the bull’s death (unique in Portugal). Foreign visitors see the historic parade of bullfighters and forcados, and the final {“apote} execution of the bull.

Daily Encerro (Running of the Bulls)

Attendees line the barricaded streets to see bulls released each morning. The atmosphere is exciting and interactive; visitors can watch from a safe perch behind barriers.
