Festa das Cruzes de Barcelos

Each May, the town of Barcelos celebrates the Festa das Cruzes, born of a 17th-century miracle of rain and devoted to the Holy Cross. Beginning with the changing of the decorated crosses on the eve, the festival fills the streets with processions and flowers, in a celebration of rural piety woven deep into the town's identity.
