Each August 15, the Kefalonian village of Markopoulo marks the Dormition of the Virgin with a wonder all its own. Small harmless snakes, the "snakes of Panagia," appear in the church around her icon, in a celebration where an old marvel of nature and deep Marian devotion meet on the feast day of Our Lady of Snakes.

The Panagia Fidousa (Our Lady of Snakes) is a local manifestation of her, tied to a legend of nuns miraculously saved from pirates by snakes in medieval times. Each August her devotees interpret the snakes’ presence in the church as signs of divine favor.
