Each December, the old town of Geneva travels back four hundred years for the Escalade, marking the night in 1602 when the city beat back a surprise attack by the Duke of Savoy. Marchers in 17th-century dress parade by torchlight to fife and drum through the cobbled streets, reliving the night the walls held.
Spectators line the parade route to witness elaborately costumed participants (soldiers, artisans, civilians) enact scenes of the siege. Visitors hear drums and fanfares, view historical crafts demonstrations, and join in singing patriotic songs.

After a surprise night assault on Geneva’s walls on 11–12 December 1602, the citizenry repelled the invaders. The Fête de l’Escalade grew from early 17th-century commemorations of this victory. Its characters and symbols (Mère Royaume’s soup kettle, costumed musketeers, black-eyed pea soup) preserve local stories of solidarity and independence.
