Each December, the old town of Geneva travels back four hundred years for the Escalade, marking the night in 1602 when the city beat back a surprise attack by the Duke of Savoy. Marchers in 17th-century dress parade by torchlight to fife and drum through the cobbled streets, reliving the night the walls held.
