Each Pentecost, nearly a million people make their way to the tiny Andalusian village of El Rocío to honor its beloved Virgin. Brotherhoods travel for days by horse and decorated ox-cart across the marshes, singing and dancing along the way, in the largest and most joyful pilgrimage in southern Spain.

Key moments

Procession of the Virgin of El Rocío

Pilgrims line the dirt paths, and when the Virgin passes, everyone sings an emotional flamenco-tinged hymn (the Salve), and many throw flowers. Visitors witness sacred dance and the raising of the image within the crowd.

Sacrificio of the “Borriquita”

Families stand along the route to see the Virgin image on a donkey. Many wear traditional flamenco attire. The moment is celebratory and kid-friendly, with church bells and applause.
