The El Rocio pilgrimage is a layered Marian devotion spanning seven centuries. The earliest evidence is a statue dated by scholars to c. 1280-1335, placed in a hermitage in the recently reconquered Donana marshlands. Alfonso XI's 14th-century Libro de la Monteria mentions the 'chapel of Sancta Maria de las Rocinas,' the first textual attestation. The statue's original inscription read 'Nuestra Senora de los Remedios' before it became known as 'Las Rocinas...
