Orthodox Easter (Paştele Ortodox) is the most important religious holiday in Romania. Celebrated after a 40-day fast during Holy Week, it marks the Resurrection of Jesus. Romanian traditions include midnight liturgies, candlelight processions, egg painting and feasting. Bucharest’s Patriarchal Cathedral on Dealul Mitropoliei is the national center of celebration. Colors (especially red eggs) symbolize Christ’s blood and new life.
