At midnight on Orthodox Easter, the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest fills with the Resurrection service, led by the Patriarch himself. Thousands gather with unlit candles in the dark, then pass a single holy flame from hand to hand until the whole church glows and the cry rings out, "Christ is risen!"

Attendees hold lit candles throughout the church. Afterwards, clergy and worshippers move outside in candlelit procession around the cathedral. Participants greet each other with 'Hristos a înviat!' and share blessed red eggs.
