Each Easter Sunday at midday, about seventy riders set out from the Catholic church in Ostritz to circle the town and its fields. Their Ostersaatreiten, or sowing ride, joins the joy of the Resurrection with a wish for fertile fields, in a celebration more open and ecumenical than the Sorbian rides it resembles.

Although similar to the Sorbian Easter rides, the Ostritz sowing ride has a more ecumenical character (open to participants of all backgrounds). It reflects the regional farming traditions of Saxony’s eastern Marchen, blending Christian Easter message with polychrome folk rites ensuring good harvests. It is organized by the local parish and is an established community event.
