Each June, the city of Derby brings the Peak District's well-dressing tradition into its urban Arboretum park. Volunteers decorate the wells and springs with intricate pictures made of flower petals and natural materials, followed by a communal dedication, in a modern revival of an old Derbyshire custom of honoring water.

Well dressing in Derby expands on the unique Derbyshire spring/well-decorating custom. It ties into the local cult of St Alkmund (Derby’s patron saint), whose holy well in Derby once inspired annual religious rites. Today the Arboretum festival is organized by community groups to celebrate Derby’s heritage and maintain the link to peak district traditions in an urban park setting.
This event has roots in religious tradition. Visitors should show respect by remaining quiet during the blessing, not stepping on or touching the flower pictures, and approaching the well with reverence (it is a holy site).
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
