Each year, the southern Bessarabian town of Bolhrad celebrates the heritage of the Gagauz, a Turkic Christian people, with a festival of folk culture. Song-and-dance groups from the Gagauz villages perform in traditional costume amid displays of food and craft, in a warm celebration of a community that settled here over two centuries ago.
Gagauzes migrated to Bessarabia in the 18th century. The festival (since 2013) was initiated by the local Gagauz cultural association with regional support to revive their folklore and crafts. It underscores Odessa oblast’s dedication to multiculturalism.
