Corpus Christi Procession Benediktbeuern / Procession to Bichl

Fronleichnamsprozession Benediktbeuern / Prozession nach Bichl

Benediktbeuern, Germany

The Fronleichnamsprozession in Benediktbeuern is a major Corpus Christi procession tradition in the Loisachtal valley of Upper Bavaria, dating back to 1273 and regarded as the oldest such procession in Bavaria. It consists of two parts: the Thursday Corpus Christi procession through Benediktbeuern, and the Sunday procession from Benediktbeuern to the neighboring village of Bichl. The Blessed Sacrament is carried through decorated streets accompanied by brass bands (Blasmusik), mountain riflemen (Gebirgsschützen), parish groups with church banners, people in traditional Bavarian dress (Tracht), and the community at prayer. Four outdoor altars mark stations along the route. The event is organized by the Catholic parish of Benediktbeuern and begins at the Klosterhof (monastery courtyard) with a festive open-air Mass before the procession sets out.
