Each Good Friday, the town of Qormi fills with some 150 children dressed as Roman soldiers, biblical figures, and clergy. They carry small statues of the Passion through the streets, in a celebration that gives the young a place in the deeply Catholic Holy Week traditions of Malta.
Good Friday processions are central to Maltese Holy Week traditions, reflecting a strong Catholic heritage. In Qormi, one of Malta's oldest cities, the adult Passion procession dates back to at least 1794. The children’s procession was introduced in the mid-20th century to involve youth in these rituals. It symbolizes communal faith during Holy Week and reinforces Qormi’s identity as "Città Pinto" with deep Easter traditions.
Visitors should behave respectfully and dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees). It is customary in Malta to fold arms across the chest during the procession and to cross oneself frequently.
Attendance can be appropriate while active documentation is not. Let local boundaries define your role.
