On the last Saturday of September, the Swiss village of Charmey welcomes its cattle home from the high summer pastures with the Désalpe, one of the largest in the Gruyère region. Flower-crowned, bell-ringing cows parade through the village amid crowds, in a colorful celebration of the old rhythm of alpine farming.

Historically, Swiss mountain farming communities practice seasonal transhumance, moving livestock between valley and mountain pastures. Charmey’s Désalpe celebrates this custom: after four months in the alpine meadows, herds adorned with dahlias, chrysanthèmes and sapin branches descend to the valley.
