Each year before Lent, the whole town of Cerknica throws itself into one of Slovenia's biggest and most inventive carnivals. Giant homemade masks and figures from local legend parade through the streets, washed down with sweet carnival doughnuts, in a celebration that keeps centuries of mask-making alive.
